Christianity Growing In Albania

Christianity in Albania: A Historical Perspective

Origins and Growth

The genesis of Christianity in Albania dates back to the arrival of Christians in Illyria shortly after the time of Jesus. In 58 AD, a bishop was appointed in Dyrrhachium (modern-day Durrës), marking the official establishment of the faith in the region. Within a period of 30 years, the Evangelical Church in Albania miraculously rose from the ashes of a devastating fire.

In 325 AD, Albania became one of the first nations to embrace Christianity as its official religion. The subsequent centuries witnessed the profound influence of Christianity on Albanian society and culture, leaving a lasting imprint on its identity.

Religious Landscape

Today, Islam holds the majority of religious adherents in Albania, followed by Christianity. However, the level of religiosity is generally low, with a significant population of irreligious Albanians. Christianity in Albania traces its origins to the apostolic era, as evidenced by the biblical account of Titus visiting Dalmatia, a province that encompassed present-day Albania.
